1st Grade
Reading
In first grade, reading and phonics are taught together using a series of readers.In the beginning, the readers use single vowel, then progress to words with two vowels.The students learn to read for appreciation and understanding through both oral and silent reading.
Spelling
In spelling, students learn the techniques needed to become a better speller.Each lesson includes reading the words, spelling the words orally, and a written exercise.Emphasis on handwriting is included while students write their spelling words.
Language Arts
Students learn to use words effectively to express their thoughts and emotions.They see the structure and orderliness of language and develop the ability to apply their knowledge of grammatical structure to their own thoughts and words.Students begin to study sentence structure with the correct capitalization, punctuation and correct verb tense.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the students develop skills in number sense and recognition.They learn to manipulate numbers in addition and subtraction facts.The students also work with money, graphs, time, fractions, and measurement.
Social Studies
Students learn about many different places around the world.One unit is an in-depth study of the
United States of America, which includes specific people and places.As students look deeper into American studies, they investigate different maps and the symbols represented on them.Additionally, students learn about community helpers throughout the year.
Science
Students discover God’s world through science.Specifically, students study themselves, their toys, animals, insects, plants, and seasons.In science, students observe, investigate, predict, and experiment.The last nine weeks focuses on health and the human body.
Bible
Bible focuses on events and people from the Old Testament, with a few units devoted to Jesus the Savior, and the early Church.Students learn that the Bible is the story of God’s acts and words, written so that we, His people, might have a better understanding of Him and how He desires us to live our lives.We desire that students make an informed commitment to serve God and live out that commitment through love, obedience, and service.
