Reading


The second grade reading program is built to develop independent readers and writers, improve oral reading skills, maximize reading comprehension, and increase speaking and listening skills. These skills are reinforced through the Scholastic Reading Counts Program, homework reading, a monthly reading log, and the reading of various readers in class.


Language Arts and Spelling

The second grade language arts program enables students to increase their reading comprehension, build vocabulary, teach word analysis skills, and give phonetic spelling tips. In spelling students learn new words and learn how to correctly use them in spoken and written language.


Mathematics

This math curriculum enables children to develop a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts of mathematics. New objectives are introduced through selected activities, and the concepts are then practiced in each succeeding lesson. All areas of math are integrated so that children see the interrelationships. Areas of focus include addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers, fractions, multiplication, division, decimals, money, graphing, mixed numbers, telling time to the minute, and many other areas.


History

The second grade history program gives students a look at

America
. Students learn about

America
’s Flag, Freedoms, Patriotic Holidays, Songs, and also learn about Separatists, Colonists, Pioneers, and New Americans. The students also learn all of the 50 states by the time the book is completed. The students gain a sense of patriotism and pride as they learn more about the great country in which we live.


Science (includes Health)

The second grade science curriculum offers students learning opportunities through observation, hands-on activities, and reading. Students learn about themselves, animals, plants, stars and planets. The last nine weeks is devoted to our health curriculum.


Bible

The Bible curriculum has a separate theme for each quarter: “God Frees His People,” “Freedom with Rules,” “Jesus Set Us Free to Obey the Great Commandment,” and “Jesus Sets Us Free to Serve.” The lessons include Noah, Abraham, Israelites, Moses, Pharaoh, Plagues, the Ten Commandments, being set apart, Aaron, Joshua, Jesus’ life, the Temple, Books of the Bible, and more, which are taught through hands-on activities, Bible reading, and enrichment worksheets.A weekly memory verse is part of each lesson.
