Seniors Paige Williams, Kyle Stidom, Wendy Brown, Jon Maurer, Maddie Booher, and Josh Johnson were the nominees. After two rounds of voting earlier in the week, Jon and Maddie were chosen by the student body as GCA’s 2012 Homecoming King and Queen. “I feel really honored to be chosen for Homecoming queen. I thought it was really cool that two of my close friends were nominated with me,” said Maddie.

Junior Prince and Princess were Jacob Richards and Alexis Stanford, while Gunnar Rastenburg and Alexa Franklin were nominated as the sophomore Prince and Princess. Freshman Mark Gibson and Claire Williams represented the freshman class as Prince and Princess. Returning to GCA to crown Maddie as queen, graduate Alyssa Swearingen made an appearance to award the new queen with a crown and bouquet of flowers.

All of court looked stunning in their classy attire. Paige’s dress was a favorite among the crowd. “I picked that dress because it was different and unique. I loved the vibrance of the red,” said Paige. While Paige’s dress was extravagant, Wendy went with a different approach. “I love how simple yet elegant my dress was. I absolutely adore black dresses, so it was perfect for me. Plus, it was on sale!” Wendy said.

In a low scoring affair, Lucas Peters, sophomore, stepped up for the Cougars when senior Kyle Stidom went down with an injury and was only able to play limited time. In front of a capacity crowd, the Cougars played hard on defense, executed on offense, and proved they were deserving of their ranking. The Cougars look to use this as a momentum block and look to continue their winning ways. Coach Satre does not want the team to be satisfied with being 10-1, but would rather the team focus on working hard and improving day after day and game after game in order to be playing their best ball come sectional time.

While the goal he has set is to reach 2000 points during his high school basketball career, senior Kyle Stidom recently achieved a milestone he was not even aware was within his reach. During the game against Crispus Attucks on January 6, Stidom scored enough points to make him Johnson County’s all-time leading scorer in boys high school basketball. Stidom remains humble…and grateful: “It’s really a blessing. It feels good to know that your hard work pays off. It’s nice to have an achievement like that…something to tell your kids about.”

Still, Stidom wants that 2000th point: “It means a lot. When I set goals for myself, I really want to achieve them. To think I could be part of a group of only forty other players in Indiana to reach that goal would be a great way to end my high school career.” In order to reach his goal, Stidom needs 220 points during the next 9 games – an average of 23 points per game. That is not out of the realm of possibility with his current average of 25 points per game this season.

Stidom will have an opportunity to chip away at those 220 points at tonight’s 7:30 game at Baptist Academy.

There’s no denying some of the blessings in Laura Story’s life. She wrote the No. 1 worship hit “Indescribable” recorded in 2004 by Chris Tomlin, married a handsome athlete named Martin Elvington the next year, and began working in music and women’s ministry at the 4,000-member Perimeter Church in Atlanta. After signing an artist deal with the INO Records, her 2008 national debut won a Dove Award for Inspirational Album and earned Laura two consecutive nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year—all blessings, indeed.

But amidst that success a brain tumor hospitalized her husband in 2006. The faith Story sang about was put through the unexpected fires of fear and loneliness; most young newlyweds don’t imagine being kept alive at one point by breathing machines or having to find their way through significant post-operative vision and memory loss. Could grace notes resound from such a life-altering struggle? Laura’s incisive new album, Blessings, suggests they do.

“Life is filled with things you don’t expect, but the Bible tells us to respond by trusting God and continuing to worship him,” Story begins. “Martin hasn’t received complete healing—and that can be hard at times when we view God as all-powerful and all-loving. But here we are now saying, ‘Yes, this is how faith works.’ God has proven to be faithful. We have been truly blessed out of a circumstance that at first didn’t seem like much of a blessing at all.”

Among the positives, Laura sees the timing of their new international travel opportunities as no coincidence. Singing and teaching in churches across the United States, Western Europe, and South America, she believes “we have a voice that wasn’t there prior to this suffering. I can hardly begin to tell you of the hundreds of hurting people we’ve prayed with, people going through more than we have. This is a chance to share the gospel.”

Story’s perspective has also changed for the better; the words of James 1:2 (Consider it a great joy . . . whenever you experience various trials) ring especially true and duly influence the joyful, wisdom-loving tone throughout Blessings.

“Don’t get the wrong idea. It hasn’t been easy,” Laura admits. “Everyone wants to be a mature and equipped follower, but would I have signed up had I known what it would take? God has grown us up, deepened our faith, our awareness of our great need for him as a savior, daily. We knew it before, but we didn’t see it. This is a good place to be.”

Blessings reflects that hopeful place. A worship project at heart with constant threads of pop energy and singer/songwriter warmth, the album was recorded in Georgia at Chris Tomlin’s studio and produced by Nathan Nockels (Passion). Story penned most of the ten songs herself but partnered with co-writers including Brenton Brown and Third Day’s Mac Powell.

The opening tracks exude enthusiastic praise to Jesus, creating a trilogy of modern church anthems, comparable to the Hillsong style, that identifies Christ as the truth in my life . . . my salvation (“This Is the Day”), the gentle namesake in “Friend of Sinners,” and justice from every oppression, forgiveness for every confession, but most of all love in “You Are Love.”

Laura says of the soaring latter selection, “God is the author of love. He made it up and gave the greatest demonstration of it on the cross. I met with some other worship leaders to write about the breakthrough moment when we as believers really make that connection.”

Such a realization demands a response like that found on “One Life to Lose,” a piano-driven countercultural tune whose premise Story likens to a quote by martyred Christian missionary Jim Elliot: He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.

“The world supports an idea of self-centered living because ‘I just have this one life,’ but we need to look at it the other way,” explains Laura. “We only have one life to give to God. I don’t want to have held anything back. I don’t want to be a conservative Christian; I want to give with abandon, to be spent, to truly give my life away for the cause of Christ.”

Yet Story knows firsthand the journey to surrender gets complicated—that it sometimes involves having to redefine what God’s “blessings” could mean, a spiritual wrestling match she perfectly encapsulates on Blessings’ breathtaking title track and first single:

What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life is a revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy?

“The song shows that we still have more questions than answers,” Laura confesses. “But there’s a decision that I find God is asking us to make: whether we are going to choose to interpret our circumstances based on what we hold to be true about God, or whether we’re going to judge what we hold to be true about God based on our circumstances.”

Laura and Martin’s circumstances have magnified the blessing of marriage. High school sweethearts, they faced the strong chance their long-awaited bond might last just two years.

“Once you’ve rallied through a life-threatening illness together, the rest of it is like a surprise; every day is a new gift that might not have been there. It’s not as big a deal now if he leaves his socks on the floor,” Laura says with a smile.

She likens “Faithful God,” the beautifully sung, highly emotional closing praise song from Blessings, to the Lord entering into a marriage covenant with his people. In fact, when Story is asked about all that she and her husband have been through the past five years, the lyrics provide the answer.

“People ask how we’re doing, and I like to say: ‘We have a faithful God.’ Every promise he’s kept, every need he’s met.”

Without a doubt, blessings abound in Laura Story’s life. Offstage, she and Martin love to be outdoors, riding bikes or trekking their way through the book 50 Hikes in North Georgia. She also meets women from church for coffee a couple of times during the week, talking one-on-one about the lessons their congregation explores in Sunday worship. And it all pours back into her musical gift.

“Life is cool,” she concludes. “I work at a church that lets me be a recording artist. I record for a label that lets me work at a church instead of having to always be on tour. And I love how it all interconnects. This dynamic is what makes me a healthy person. I am blessed!”

The freshmen and sophomore classes went to the IRT to see Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. While Joseph Hong (sophomore) did not care for the play, Hailey Healy (sophomore) did like it. Hailey thought the best part of the play was “how much the actors got into it.” Alysia
Eicher (sophomore) thought that it helped her to understand better what she had been reading in English class. The freshmen have been studying Julius Caesar in World History and the sophomores have been reading the play in English class. The class is split on who had read the book before seeing the play. Because there are not enough books, some of the class will be reading it next semester. Although they did not get to go anywhere else besides the play, the freshmen and sophomores still enjoyed the field trip.

7th grade, START…YOUR…ENGINES! Mrs. Walters’ 7th grade class was assigned to build a balloon race car. This race car had to be able to move just by using the balloon for power. Mrs. Walters stated, “They learned about the forces of friction with the air and the straw to their balloon and the forces of friction with the wheels of their car and the floor.” Many students researched the material online and even made a demo car at home. Others, however, waited until the last minute to do their research and did not do very well. “It was hard at first, but then it got easier. It was kind of fun!” Hannah Beltz commented. Jenna Christie also commented, “The wheels were definitely the hardest part.” Overall, the 7th grade did a splendid job on this project. Grace Weeks had the fastest car, Graham Johnson’s car went the farthest, and Katie Cruse’s car was voted the prettiest.

Honoring veterans for their services and sacrifices is an important thing to remember. That is why every year the fifth grade class invites several veterans to come and watch them put on a play and share their sincere gratitude toward their visiting veterans. After the play, which is about the sinking of the Lusitania, the kids gather around and sing a finale of God Bless the USA. Even though it might be a day off of school, Mrs. Johnson, the mastermind of the play and teacher of the fifth grade class, said that she, “Loves seeing how grateful the kids truly are.”

Oscar Wells, Zach McCarty, and Jack Buras all said that their favorite parts were introducing the veterans. Oscar’s part in the play was a crew member, Zach’s character was an American citizen, and Jack’s part was Captain Turner. Presley McGraw shared that she got the most out of it when she sang to the Veterans. Admiring her dad as she got to introduce him to the class, Rylie Scott said was the best part of the whole day for her. Both Eliot Murray and Kathryn Knauss said they enjoyed the skit the best. Mrs. Johnson explains that the reason she puts on the whole production is in hope that, “The kids won’t take for granted America’s freedom.”

Every year GCA’s Parent Teacher Fellowship hosts a Chili Supper and Dessert Auction Event. GCA families bring in different kinds of chili and soups and eat dinner together. While people are eating, they can bid on silent auction dessert items. Later on in the night, there is a live auction, and desserts go for high prices. Some even sell for over 100 dollars. This is one of the only large fundraisers that PTF has annually, so it is very important that it is a success. PTF made over 3000 dollars this year, which is more than years past. It was very encouraging to PTF that there was much more involvement this year, making the event a huge success. The senior class helped with the live auction and cleaned up afterwards making 280 dollars. This year’s fundraiser was headed up by Cindy Frost, and she said, “I am very thankful for all the help and involvement this year. It was a huge success.”
