Storms Ahead: A Student Devotional

Sometimes as we’re going through life we face physical storms: problems in relationships, deaths, money problems, temptations, and etc. Not all of us are going to face physical storms, but Jesus says that we will all eventually face the storms of life. Luckily for us, Jesus has given us all of the things we need in order to overcome these storms. The first thing you can do is take up the shield of faith. Anytime you’re going through a storm, the apostle Paul tells us that if you take up the shield of faith you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 6:16).

The second thing you can do is trust in Jesus your Savior. Mark 4:35-41 tells of when Jesus quite literally calmed a storm after the disciples were scared that they were going to drown. Afterward, He said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The disciples, who were completely terrified, said, “Who is this? Even the winds and waves obey him!” During storms, our natural response is to panic. It sometimes seems as if Jesus isn’t there. Luckily, we have the ability to cry out to Him and say, “Lord, save us!” and He will! Another natural response is doubt and fear. However, Jesus tells us that our response should be to trust in Him and not be afraid. Jesus is more than capable of calming the storm just like He did in Mark 4.
