Guard Your Heart: A Student Devotional

Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Jesus tells us multiple times in the scriptures that what’s in our hearts matters. He tells us this A LOT. From our hearts flows hopes, fears, dreams, anger, anxiety, forgiveness, love, peace, stress, and generosity. Everything that makes up the person you are comes from your heart. This means that we need to take extra special care of our hearts and keep them guarded at all times. When your mind is full of Godly things instead of world things your heart becomes much easier to be protected. You can fill your mind each and every day with Godly things by enveloping your thoughts with scripture, prayer, and meditation.

Guarding the heart is hard. The world is full of temptations, and the devil is continually on the prowl for hearts and minds to attack. Don’t lose hope, every time you feel like doing the wrong thing and you choose to do the right thing instead -- God is smiling. You can do any task you put your mind to if you do it through God’ strength and power even if that task is something as difficult as guarding your heart in the sin-filled world we live in today. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
